I heard the huge boom of the firecrackers and seen the different colors of the fireworks exploding in the dark sky. I heard people strike their cooking pots' covers awakening the whole neighborhood. here comes the New Year - year 2012.

Looking back 2011, it seems like people doesn't want 2012 to come and by the time the year approaches,people become nervous and frightened what this year may bring especially that it was said that the Year 2012 will be the end of the World! (and just like the year 2000, which is a false alarm)Yet people are in the situation to believe thus especially knowing what happened to Iligan and Cagayan due to Bagyong Sendong. Being struck by that kind of calamity, one can think - "it's the end of the world". Well I think the movie like 2012 has a big influence why people think so.

But before we move on to debating on the end of the world and the second coming of Jesus Christ, let us think of what 2011has made us.

A lot happened on the previous year. From the International to local.A lot of political issues been tackled as the ups and downs in the show business. Well, speaking of these things seems too big for me to dig into. So I just want to try what the happenings in my life during 2011.

2011 has a lot of surprises and blessings for me.On this year I have my first employment which I has resigned on the end of this year also due to things which I will not mention here anymore, let me keep it to myself, okay? I have been surprised by my high school classmates who had been married and bear children which I did not expect they would in this age ("expect the unexpected"). Blessings? A lot, but I also have sad moments in this year. Sad things that some were resolved, others still remained. I wish these things would be settles int his year of the Dragon.

2012 - Year of the Water Dragon. I don't have any idea what comes in store for me this year. All I wish and hope that this year would be another fruitful year to me and especially my family. I should have had my wish list for this year but there are only three major things I want to have this year:

1. A JOB
2. Successful Business program
3. good health of the family

If this three would go as I intended it to be, well I know everything will come smoothy...

This was the Steve Jobs that we know. One of the most influential people in the world especially in terms of technology. He had made a great impact to the way people work and play. There's a lot of lessons to learn from him. A drop-out becomes CEO...

It's sad but Steve's life has encountered the blue screen of death just like any computers. Jobs' death was announced by Apple yesterday(October 5, 2011 - Wednesday). it is sad that at the age of 56, jobs retired not just in his position but in his life. If given such long life,it is sure that he can provide another technology one can't ever imagine just like what he did.

Jobs death was a great loss not just to people who are close to him but to the entire world which he change through technology...

Losing Her

I was a bit shocked as my sister texted me last July 25 saying that Grandma died. I asked myself how? though, she's this thin, little woman, yet I am sure she's not sick or whatsoever. She's already 80 years old and I thought it is just so early for her to leave this world.

I am not close to her, honestly. It was this feud we have in our family that started over this. the nonsensical jealousy my mother's siblings have in our family. I don't know why they are mad at us - especially to papa. He had done nothing wrong to them. he even helped them get good jobs but they just lose those jobs because of such vices which my father doesn't approve.

Though, we are considered as NOT PART of the family,I still considered her as my LOLA. I have a lot of good memories with her, too. Losing her hurts me too, though I haven't shed a single tear seeing her lying inside the coffin. Her expression shows that she's agonizing in her deathbed. Her face doesn't show a happy and contented life. She's hurting inside and I can see it in her face.

Though not close to her, I can still remember her visiting the Day Care Center where I studied and giving me 2 peso coins for "merienda" or she will be at the Day Care's door waiting for me holding the banana cue in one hand. There are times that I'm not in the mood to go home, I simply skip the afternoon session at the Day Care Center and went to my grandparents house and have my siesta there. Well, even though those were vague memories, still, I can remember her face smiling at me and her subtle voice every time she speaks to me.

But all those memories have sunked and buried...
She doesn't even want anybody to be near us.
Why does she despise us so much?
We haven't done anything wrong.
We just live our life uprightly...

My heart had been filled with hate since then. I know she doesn't like my father and not even care much for her very own daughter - my mother. I have a lot of questions, only her can answer. But those things would be buried with her...

Mao ni atong tawag sa ila. Mga tao na dili nato ig-unsa pero dako kaayo ug impluwensya sa atoa. Sila and nagtudlo sa atoa sa numero, alpabeto,pagsulat, pagbasa, pagsayaw, pagtula... Ug dili lang kana and mga nahimo aning mga tawhana, isa pud nagmugna kung kinsa man ta sa karon. Sila ang atong mga Maestro ug Maestra.

Nakahinumdom ko sa una sa akong pagkabata, naa sa trabaho sila mama ug papa ug ako ibilin lamang sa Day Care Center. Didto nako nailhan ang akong pinakaunang maestra maliban sa akong ginikanan - siya si ma'am Sarsuelo...

Sa iya nako natagamtaman ang igong kahadlok kung magsaba na. Kay siya manili gyud ug baba kung saan kaayo ka... Siguro tungod ato na disiplina medyo dli pud ta karon pasaway...

Naabot ko ug elementarya ug sekundarya, nakailaila ang si bisan kinsang mga maestro ug maestra. Silang tanan nakutloan ko ug mga leksyon dili lang sa pageskwela kundi mga leksyon pud sa kinabuhi...

Sa batang edad, nakahinuklog ko sa kalisod na buluhaton isip sa isa ka magtutudlo ug saludo kaayo ko sa ilaha ug gipangarap kung na unta mamahimo akong usa sa ilaha. Pero, adunay mga panahon na madiskorahe ko na mahimong usa ka matutudlo tungod lang pud sa mga wala pulos na magtutudlo... Busa nilihis ko ug plano kay dili ko gusto mapareha sa mga ingon niato na mga magtutudlo...

But I realized that not all teachers are of the same kind... Some people are just like that. I never thought that the dream I have when I was young would be realized... i still do salute teacher, my mentors, my instructors... they are one of the people who mold me to be who I am right now...

An Amazing ?Rootcrop?

I was just browsing Yahoo Korea search engine when an article struck my attention. (To read the whole article click here)

Héshǒuwū (何首乌)or Polygonum - the plant's name.

It is just a normal plant that anyone can hardly notice but when you pluck it up to its roots, YOU WILL BE AMAZED to see a human like replica rootcrop! It is like a sculpture of a human- has eyes, nose, mouth, ears and even genitals. I don't know if this kind of plant really has root crops like the one below but it seems every pictures posted on the site where I got it are all the same, except others are in a sitting position (laugh)

As to what I had understood, this plant is used as a medicine in China and can be taken for long life. It is also good for detoxification, since it is a good laxative. it also a good medicine for itch and can help lower cholesterol level.(http://www.zwbk.org/zh-tw/Lemma_Show/105046.aspx)

The plants root crop is not just the one who is amazing but the whole plant is. Hmmm, but what intrigued me is this...

DISORIENTED...

I'm still into it until now. It was just last night that I heard about three or four gun shots nearby the road I am walking and discovered that a man had been shot on the same site that time.

Last night was no ordinary night for me. I am just thankful that I got addicted to the new game I downloaded that I made my time-in at work late.

It was already past 8:30 in the evening. I am hurriedly walking the path to school when I heard a big BANG. I got alarmed yet I still continue doubling my pace since I'm already late for work. I had a couple of steps when again I heard another BANG three times. Though hurrying for work, I slow down my pace and looked around me. No one is around me yet I can sense that something is wrong nearby. I walked slowly until a car then a motorcycle passed by and people are already in site. I thought there was a fight nearby since a lot of people were there - faces were curious. To avoid any accidents or anything that will put me in between the fight, I waved for a motorcycle so I can have my escape to whatever bad incident that is happening on that path that night.

When we reach the scene, chill flows down right on me seeing the blood-bathe body laying flat on the ground, downfaced. That was the time that I realized I must have witnessed the shooting, even worse, I could have been shot also if ever I have left the house earlier.

I reached school unharmed yet I am disoriented that the fact that I must have seen the culprit without knowing it. I pity the guy for his fate. I don't know if he survived or died. But I am praying that he live. I have no idea why the shooting happened, who was the bad guy or the good guy but there is only one thing I want - I want to not experience that incident again. It's horrible! It's frightening...

I am just thankful that I made it late last night. I think God really has his own purpose on doing things we may not like but in the end will thank HIM for that...

As a routine work before starting my day at the Com Lab, I browsed Yahoo for news. There I saw the floating camera shots of this certain Japanese woman named Natsume Hayashi.At first look, the photos seemed eerie. Yet, it made me remember the goddess in the Chinese movie The Promise .

I have seen photos of people jumping which they called "jump shot" and when you're good enough with your hands then you can really capture people floating in the air. But this ones different. they are really floating like the ghosts in Asian horrors, yet, they are not that frightful, yet they're freaky a li'l bit but , I really liked it.

Without Anyone to Lean On - I've Made it!

Looking back in college, It was always stressful for me when it's time for programming or coding. I am really honest to say that I am very very poor in programming (I am the worst programmer ever!). Well at least I admit it than pretend to be someone I am not.

OK, programming. Encoding series of codes in order to come up a system. Making a system takes a lot of analysis and coding (I hate the latter!).

Way back in college, when I have no choice but to make my own program, I have to tap several shoulders in order to come up a system, not excellent but functional but not fully-functional. I am just lucky that our instructors gave points even to unfinished systems (grin). Aside from tapping shoulders for help, I also tap great minds and fast fingers to code the system for me (laugh). I am dependent to our classmates with exceptional programming abilities. I usually seek help by asking for some codes from them and edit it for my own system. I am kind of person who recycles codes. yes I am.

In order to make a system, I must have someone to help me make it...

But...

Just last month, I wa shocked of myself that I completed a fully functional system for the HRD office. I called it EIS or Employee Information System. Well, actually it was made in the Microsoft Access platform. It's just like the Visual Fox Pro but is more user friendly an more object oriented. All you have to do is drag htan drop then assign function and TADA! you have yourself a system to use. Very simple as long as you have a Microsoft Access 2007 or any MS Access version installed in your PC then you can make a system within a minimum of 60 minutes.

Summer Class Teaching Experiences

Summer classes has ended. I am now at the Computer laboratory of the school where I am teaching preparing for my syllabus fo rthe first semester. Out of the blue, thoughts about my experience for the last two months flashes back to me.

I remembered going to class for the first time as an instructor for my BSED1 ICT class. I was trembling back then, unable to cope up in taming the butterflies in my stomach. I stuttered, stuttered and stuttered. I can't even say the correct term for such word. I don;t know how to say things the way it was used to say. I'm speechless. I'm covered with sweat and my palms are frozen - as cold as ice. I can feel my ears - they're hot and seems like they're red. I can feel my face sweel of heat (I know I'm blushing...) I am shy. Actually I am not prepared to face my first students back then.

As I think of those things right now, I just had to smirk remembering those funny events in my life this past few months. At least, I have learned something from that first encounter and I learned to be confident a little more right now.

Life is a matter of change. We are changing constantly. Though we are not that aware of it, but when we look back, everything seems very different...^^

MY VERY FIRST STUDENTS

"In anything you do, there's always a first".

This saying seemed too old that I don't even know who made it. Yet,that the saying means is very clear. AS clear as the starry skies at night and as clear as the blue calm sea in the morning.

My first time to teach - my first students...

It is always a pleasure for me to meet such wonderful creatures. They seemed like high school kids though but what I really like about them is that the seemed-to-be childish attitudes and most specially young faces had a lot of hardships endured.

I have been to college and I have been a student once in my life yet, I did not experience such hardships they are enduring right now. Well, I'm not saying I did not experienced hardships when I was in college but things such as - loaning money to instructors just to pay the tuition fee, maintaining grades 85 and above not to be kicked out of the scholarship program and working 8 hours a day just to support their education is out of my league when I was in college.

I feel for them, very much. Then, I have two of my students who forced to drop their subjects because they can't afford to pay the tuition anymore.

Now, I understand why some of them can't absorb and internalize what I am discussing because they are ?TIRED?

Hmmm... I don't know. I may be boring like a bug keep on buzzing while discussing the topics for the day...

Am I making sense here? I just keep on typing random words...

But, well, They are my first students...

Mickey in an Epic TV Series

Hmmm...

It's been a while since I last seen Mickey (former member of TVSQ, current member of JYJ)on videos. I think, this is the reason why I am eager to watch his first TV series 'til the end.

Sung Kyun Kwan Scandal - that was the title of this very TV series. I had watched until, I think, episode 2??? Dang! I forgot but I haven't forgotten the last scene I saw.

By the way I copied the series' synopsis from koreandrama.org and it goes like this:

Sungkyunkwan Scandal is set in Sungkyunkwan University in the late Joseon era during the reign of King Jeongjo, revolving around the exploits and love stories of four youths. When her younger brother’s illness worsens and their family is in danger of being evicted from their house for lack of money, Kim Yoon Hee enters the school under his name, disguised as a boy in her desperation to support him. The moment I spotted this series @ Youtube, I got addicted and I even forgot to make the topic for my next lesson at school... weeee...

Research is a part of the curriculum of every course. From elementary to high school, we had encountered research as a part of our Filipino and English subjects. Not to mention the requirement in college that is one of the reasons why some of the graduating students can’t march the aisle and wear their togas because they did not finished their research on time. That scenario is not new to the Institute of Computing (laugh). Aside from that, we are doing research in times such as in wanting to learn more on the topic you are about to report. Wanting to know more about a place, a person or a thing is also a research. Though we didn’t know, we are doing research in our everyday lives. As long as we are alive, we continue in discovering, learning and researching.

It is said that research has something to do in deciding our future careers. I keep on asking myself what is its role in deciding my future career. I can’t imagine how learning and discovering things has to do with the future. But when I think it over and over (well, I’m doing research here, eh), I discovered how stupid I was to ask such question (I admit I’m kind of dumb sometimes and kind of weird). I came up with the answer when one day I found myself reflecting and thinking what to do with my future. My parents always tell us that they will keep on working hard and even harder just for us to finish college so that we can have better jobs and will live a comfortable life. Well, I guess finishing college may lead to a better job but as I had observed there are a lot of college graduates who are not lucky enough to get a better job. I begin to worry and wanted to know what the reasons behind a can-be-said as unfortunate future. Without any idea of what I am doing, I had discovered that I am already doing research. Because of the situation I had cited above, I began to hunger for knowledge about the course I am in and what are the potential jobs that await me in the near future. I also began to have an evaluation of myself on what I have learned and what job I would like to have and can have. I got a lot of choices as to stick with jobs that are in lined with Information technology or to try to divert to other areas of discipline where I can also apply what I have learned in school. Since I am only doing this research on my own and I am only gathering information on the internet or in what I have observed on the things that surrounds me, I begun to validate the information. Since there are not experts that can validate what I have gathered, begun to take those things halfheartedly and find myself being tired. I just thought that time that I might be thinking too much. But my curiosity continued when I enrolled for the summer class’ apprenticeship program. I gathered another information as my days in the on the job training progresses. I learned that there are a lot of things that cannot be learned at the four corners of the classroom school and that when you want to suffice what your mind wants and needs, you must extend to others and go out from the four corners of the classroom. With that, you can learn much more.

From that experience I have in meeting the needs and wants of my curiosity about what my future career would look like, it is a real proof that research has to do with our future career. From what I have experienced, I think, the role of research in our lives is to make us be acquainted with the real world. Why did I say that? It is because; students are full of life, full of hopes and wishes and because of these big dreams, sometimes they are unaware that they are living in fantasy. Research is somewhat an eye-opener for everybody. Another thing that research can do is that it enables one to be prepared, enhance our self-esteem and make us more knowledgeable. Not just that, research also serves as a guide in deciding what path we are to choose. Hmmm… I think, I have written it all. I have answered my question too, so I guess we should start to have research right now. Start researching to know what our career and life would be like in the near future.

Well, I guess all of us want to have a better future. Nobody wants be a “nobody” when that time comes. All of us are striving hard to be someone that people may look up to in our life to come. As to me, I am very worried after graduation because I think that I am not yet ready when that time comes. But I really want to graduate this coming March because I want to help my family. That line must be very used but that is one of the reasons why I keep on going to school even I find the programming and math subjects very difficult and confusing (laugh). But even I lack such skill I am still confident to have a good career. It’s not about how you strive just today but it’s also how you decide and work hard for your future.

Research - well, I think it the most challenging part in the curriculum a student may face. Working on a research makes students lessen the time spent for gimmicks, to play online games like DOTA specifically to the guys and other student activities. It is sad to know but it is the fact. It will be the time to reflect, to be observant, to be attentive, to be positive, to be courageous, be serious and time to travel – but that is if you have to. It may transform one into something such as a geek. But that is just too exaggerated to think.

There are a lot of daily routines to be changed in order to complete your research, especially the ones like me who doesn’t know how to manage their time (laugh). Aside from being tied up to the changes made in ones daily routines, the first thing that makes research so hard is to have a topic. Yes, a topic; which is up until now, I still don’t have one. I hope I can find a good one. But before that, let us go back to where we have left in. Yes, choosing a topic for research is quite frustrating and sometimes, when you had your topic, it is disappointing to know that you cannot have a grasp of what it is all about and go back to where everything started – from scratch. Well, if you luckily have a topic, then, it’s time to start the research!

“Writing research just for the sake of passing is just a waste of time and a waste of effort.” This is what I have learned from our instructor every time he meets us for the Research course. Actually, I have learned a lot from him (credits for sir!!!) . So, from the phrase above, one can think of how to know that a research is good or not? I know that not all is that serious in doing the research, but there are times that a student prefers to know which is good and bad for the research because, practically, research counts a significant portion on the student’s grades, so it means that a good research means a higher grade. Who among the research students do not want a good grade in research? But others really want to discover something new, something good and something that will be useful for the generations to come.

Before we discuss and differentiate a good research from a bad one, let us first investigate what are the advantages or the goals of research in the lives of the graduating students. According to the article that I have read, research is assigned so that students can (1) become familiar with scholarly research, which is a central skill for college success, especially career success as well. (2) Students can gain expert knowledge on a particular subject which is related to the course and (3) for the students to learn how to synthesize and report on a secondary research in such a way that it can be available for the others. Knowing these three goals, the student may wonder how to create a good research.

Creating a good research involves not only skills and attitude but it also involves tools and guidelines. Now I understand why our instructor required us to read those one hundred articles about green computing and encouraged us to read more not only articles of those kinds but also on how to make a research paper. Ah, How I wish I could turn back time and try to finish reading those one hundred articles. If I only knew that I can use it for the times like this, then I should have read it. But I know it is my fault. Why I’m in a great regret right now? It is because one of the guidelines in making a good research is extensive reading. Due to extensive reading, one may fully understand what the subject is all about and with this; one can formulate a topic to be researched. From another article that I have read, states that the first step in creating a good research requires that a student understands the assignment requirements and the topic for the research paper. With this reading is highly recommended.

After the student understands the topic of the research, the student can begin his research. Bear in mind that the topic for the research makes sense and not just for the sake of passing. But I know that a topic cannot be approved if it doesn’t make any sense at all. It would be a useless research after all. Once the topic is set up, it is time to gather information. For some of us, students, the simplest tool to have research is the internet. Yes, we can gain much knowledge on the internet due to its wide range and that we can gain information from people around the world. The question is, does the information we get from the internet all valid and correct? We are not sure, right? Then it just proves that the internet is not an effective place to gather information. Not all information found in the internet is appropriate for a college-level research. Majority of the scholarly materials are found in libraries. Make use of the libraries and leaf the pages of the variety of academic materials. If books and the internet are not enough for the research, try to reach out to others. Try setting up an interview with someone who is familiar with the subject. In this case you can gain information out of real persons you meet face to face. In addition, a good research paper writer requires that the writer keep detailed research notes that remind the student of the details he or she had discovered through his or her research. So, it is just right to have a personal memo or notebook for us, students to jot down what we had read, learned and researched on that notebook for us not to miss necessary points in our research.

In order not to be troubled on how to arrange the information you had gathered, an outline for the research is a good tool to use. Student should deal time for making outlines before beginning the actual drafting of the paper. Using outline can group relevant information or ideas into one and can make the flow of the paper smooth. After the student completed his or her research outline, he or she can now begin the writing process. But that doesn’t ends there. One of the most lessons in writing a research paper is how to determine which quotes, paraphrases, and pieces of information to include and which is to set aside. Setting quotes in research papers can make your research credible due to lots of sources you had. These are the general guidelines in setting quotes. First, only quote when the way the writer put the words cannot be changed without changing the meaning of the passage. Second, quote when what the writer said is exceptionally important or insightful. Paraphrasing must always be cited properly and information that does little to contribute to the topic must be omitted. A good research must be double checked and is subjected to proofreading. It is just normal to write a draft and write it once more until there are no flaws to be found. There should be more time in drafting. With this, the student may be able to improve what he or she have written when they are being reviewed and checked by the adviser or by professional writers.

After beating the demons of sleepless nights due to typing drafts, the glory of finishing the research comes your way. Seems so easy but is not that simple.

Now, let’s sum up how to determine that a research paper is good. As long as the student followed what was stated above, it is quite sure that he or she can produce a good research paper. To differentiate a good research paper from a bad one, a good research paper is well-researched, well-written and well-developed. It is also focused, direct and it makes the reader care about the subject. A good research paper also follows style guidelines, is properly documented and stylistically polished. On the other hand, an ordinary research paper is poorly researched and developed, it is loaded with formatting and grammatical errors, unclear and wandering, does not engage to the readers, poorly cited and stylistically weak and may result to a lesser grade.

The difference between a good and an ordinary research paper can be linked to how the student handles himself or herself about analyzing, revising and engaging. Most students can make a good research paper if and only if they take everything by heart. He or she must be completely armed with the skill, the tools, information, courage and determination to finish the research he or she began.

In addition in terms of how a good research is evaluated, well, I think, the grade that the student gets after submission of the research paper says it all.

As I browsed pages on the Internet about the state of computer science research, I had landed on certain articles in various sites that tackle such topic.

By the way, one of the articles that I have read was all about the statement of Wm. A. Wulf, Ph.D, the president of the National Academy of Engineering and was on leave as an AT&T professor of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Virginia that time. He presented it before the U.S. House of Representatives on the 12^th day of May, 2005. He testified before the honorable about the state of Computer Science research in US.

As to what I have understood about his statement, Wulf, first presented the Science in Endless Frontier, the report that launched their system of federal funding of basic researches. Vannever Bush promoted a system in which the government will support the research such as giving funds in order for the research to be possible. But it is sad to know that the research to be funded by the government is selected depending on how the researcher presented the good points of his research.

Upon the aforementioned system, I can say that the Computer Science researches in the United States are lucky enough even though researches to be funded by the government are selected only through how much the people can benefit by the research being proposed. Speaking of benefits, Wulf presented the kinds of benefits the research being selected should give. The dividends of the research are for the nation – for national security, prosperity and health. For the national security, he summed up the researches that have made possible. These are the smart bombs, GPS, unprecedented “information awareness” for war-fighter, unmanned robotic vehicles for surveillance, enormously enhanced training through the use of virtual reality. Among the benefits gained by the nation are the three percent of national productivity fueled by information technology, dozens of multi-million dollar of industries per year, internet-enabled business model, a forty-fold reduction on the cost of telephony, a global wireless phone system and many more. Among the researches that helped the field of health is the medical imagery such as CAT scans, cochlear implants, bio sensors, smart prosthetics, and smart defibrillating pacemaker.

Some may say that the researches of the technologies aforementioned are just a huge expense by the government, huge expense in a sense that the government prepares a huge amount of money in order to make the research possible. But as to what these technologies had imparted to the nation, these technologies returned huge investments to the nation. It may even return the investment twice or thrice depending on how beneficial these researches will make. Though some of the investment made by thee government take time to be returned, these will not be wasted because it will have equally large return fort he future generations.

Secondly, Wulf also said that Computing and computer science is in the unusual position for being both a challenging intellectual discipline and at the same time it provides infrastructure in the other fields of science, engineering and commerce. Well, I guess, it is quite visible to what we, The CS research students are experiencing right now. To think it clearly, the topics being presented on the open forum last September 2 proved Wulf’s statement about Computing and Computer Science. As we can see, the proposed topics belong to computing. Engineering is also visible because the student/ researcher should plan for a framework of the project, must calculate necessary data if there are and things like that. Commerce; because all the topics presented can be manufactured for the use of the respective kinds of people the project is intended for. Research such as this made the quality of life to be better. With this, Wulf had justified that funding a research is not an expense but an investment. You can see the benefits after the research has been done and what you invest returns back to you.

“There is a marvelously rich and productive interplay between basic scientific discovery and applications, between universities and industries, between societal need and technology.” This is what Wulf believe rather than that of “basic research begets applied research begets development begets benefits to society”. I wish I had seen the figures he presented that time so that I can totally relate to what he is saying. Well, he pointed out a figure showing the relationship between industry and universities in the development of information technology which produces more that a billion dollars of revenue per year. With this, he pointed out that progress does not always start with basic research. It often involves iteratively exchanging roles between industry and university. However, if federally-funded, university basic research didn’t jive together, the technologies we are enjoying right now would not exist.

With Wulf’s statements above, I though that he is not pro to research, but as his following statement, he said that though basic research may not be the original source for the benefits that we are enjoying from technology, but it is the vital and irreplaceable component of the rich system that produces them.

Speaking about the state of Computer Science research, he pointed out that when resources are tight, researchers propose more incremental, less risky projects and that they get less on what they spend. In terms of funds, he cited that at NSF the budget for CISE (Computer and Information Science and Engineering) has grown nicely when it was in the late 80’s. A number of studies have shown but it takes years for these researches to make their way from laboratory to product. In fact, only a few of these ideas become commercial and there is no good way to predict which of these ideas will be the most important. Wulf also vent an old annoyance about agencies who gained a lot of benefits from information technology but does not even contribute to the development of the technologies to fulfill ther missions and yet Computer science research haven’t got any contribution from these agencies – NASA, DoE, NIH, etc.

What is the variety of topics in Computer Science research?

According to the Department of Computer Science, Yale University, these are the technical topics involving CS research. These are Artificial Intelligence, Vision & Robotics, Computer Systems and Networking, Distributed Computing, Machine Learning, Programming Languages, Scientific Computing & Applied Math, and Security & Cryptography.

COMDDAP – Computer Manufacturer Distributors and Dealers Association of the Philippines launched the 3-day COMDDAP Davao Expo 2009 seminar and exhibit last July 2-4, 2009 at the Grand Ballroom of the Apo View Hotel here in Davao City. The seminar has said to have two so-called categories wherein there is a free seminar open for everybody such as students, teachers, IT personnel and other IT interested individuals. There is also a closed seminar for those who had registered with a registration fee of about Php400, I think.

Many schools had participated in the said event. Aside from The University of Southeastern Philippines, I saw some students of Ateneo de Davao University, STI and University of Mindanao and other schools that offer Information technology courses. I have also acquainted a student from the ACES College of Technology of Tagum City. I didn’t recognize other students because they are not wearing either their school uniforms or identification cards.
Upon entering the Grand Ballroom, exhibits from different vendors such as Canon, Hewllet Packard, Smart Bro, Sandbox, Dell and other I.T. companies showcase their latest products and technology innovations. Cool gadgets, software, and other I.T. products that are displayed by the respective booths of different vendors can be seen and tested. The hall was filled with different kinds of people, students and I.T professionals are all alike, all hungry for learning and of the latest innovation of the different technologies of the I.T. vendors.

Few days before the event, we were told to attend such exposition for us to gather knowledge and information that can or may be used for future purposes. It is not compulsory but is required. (Laugh. That was just an expression. The two terms are synonymous.) Well, let’s go on to where we had left. Actually, I didn’t get myself registered for the said event. It was my friend who let me registered (But I asked her to and she’s just too kind to do such request. Thanks buddy!). So, I was registered to attend the 1:00 to 2:00 o’clock seminar that Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to attend it because I was fond of strolling around the hall, hopping from one booth to another and searching for the said room where the seminar took place. It was too late already that I found the Vanda room, where the seminar took place and it was already 2:30 in the afternoon (I was such a loser that time. I should have asked!). I felt so down and left the hotel and went home – boarding house. The next day, I found out that there are some students who failed to register and can still enter the room – venue for the seminar, so I tried to attend the seminar illegally (I think that was the best description for such act.) Luckily, I’ve made it to attend the seminar, unregistered. My conscience is urging me not to but my mind tells me to go. I am thankful that I made it that way because I have learned new things on the seminar (but still my conscience is hunting me).

The first speaker was from the Jupiter System Inc discussing about the ERIC DMS or Enterprise Resource Information and Control Dealer Management System. All I know based in the discussion is that ERIC Dealer Management System is an en-to-end software solution for automotive sales, and service businesses. The discussion covers the services that are catered by automobile companies, how such software can help in relation to this field and others. After the discussion was an open forum. Questions are being answered and limited CD’s of the presentation are distributed for free. Too bad I didn’t have one.

The second presentation was about the HP’s latest innovation the HP Thin Client by speaker from NEXUS Technologies Inc. The presentation really caught my attention. The presentation flowed smoothly as well as the visual presentation that can really catch your attention. HP Thin Client is a computing device that acts as an access device on a network. Though it seems like three-fourths of an actual desktop computer, it answers the problems regarding data loss, suspicious attacks, data access and many others. What astound me are the features the thin client has. It is so portable since it just weights about 3 kg and can be attached anywhere – either below the office table, at the back of the LCD monitor or just beside your monitor. It saves space due to its size. It can endure hot and dusty places such as factories, or gasoline stations because it has no fan that can sip in dust and has the ability to cool down at once. The product has eight USB ports, wherein four of it can be seen and the other four are hidden and locked for security purposes. Thin client has many variations that satisfy user needs. As the presentation went on, the speaker pointed out some institutions that had made use of the thin client. Some of them are a university in Thailand, where they use thin clients in their library, in a five star hotel and in a ticketing booth in an airport. Another one is in a gasoline station somewhere in Asia. I was fascinated by the product, not just by its looks but also its features. I was informed that it is good for networking. But I was thinking if this thin client is a good counterpart for personal computers or stand-alone desktop computers because as far as I know, the interface being used by the thin client is only virtual meaning it does not reside to the particular unit. So, I have a little doubt about using thin client as a personal computer.
After the presentation, a question and answer portion was held and those who had answered the question correctly got prizes such as 1Gb flask drive, Polo shirts and other stuff.

The next presentation came from the Edupro Inc. The presentation was all about Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The software pros and cons are discussed in detailed. The presentation is too technical that I can hardly understand what the speaker is saying. Video tutorials are also present in the discussion. After such, the crowd got energized by the question and answer portion as well as the draw lots performed by the group because of the prizes - naturally.
That was the fruit of attending that seminar, illegally. I really got something from the presentations and was captivated by the exhibits that I wished I had one. I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward for more seminars and exhibits to come. I am also looking forward to get some freebies too! (LOL)

Assuming you were tapped by the university president to evaluate the new enrollement system implemented this semester, enumerate your observations/comments and suggest possible areas and ways where improvements can be made. Your observations/suggestions should be properly validated with facts and literatures...(you may start with the diagrams posted in the strategic locations of the university)...

Just recently, I observed that the enrollment system of the University had changed. For an old student like me, I have seen an improvement to the system, though for us, the process did not changed that much.

The diagram that was posted near the rest rooms is noticeable enough to anyone who will enter the Engineering building. I thought it was just for the new and transferees that I did not even take a look at it. The same huge poster was posted in the College of Arts and Sciences building near the Registrar’s office. I did not have the chance to read it before but because of the System Analysis and Design 2, I discovered that what was illustrated in those big tarpaulin posters are the new enrollment system of the university.

To describe the new system, I jot down what was written on the diagram to be able to show what are the processes involved in the new system. In this way, I can compare the new and the old system with these. Later on, I will also show the USEP Enrollment System diagram that I’ve made in our System Analysis and Design 1. That was based on the old Enrollment procedure posted on the walls of the different colleges of the university.

Now, let’s take a look at the university’s old enrollment system.

Last school year, this is the process of the enrollment system that I followed:

1. The student pays for his/her miscellaneous fees at the Local Council, OCSC, and headlight treasurers respectively.

2. If the student is a scholar, he is required to go to the OSS to renew his scholarship to be able to validate his scholarship card.

3. The student then proceeds to his respective college adviser for grade evaluation and checking. The adviser secures Pre- registration form for the student to jot down the subjects the adviser advised him to enroll.

4. After filling out the Pre-registration form, the student returns to the adviser for encoding of his new subjects and for signature.

5. After that, the student proceeds to the college encoder for encoding of subjects and printing of COR.

6. The student who is not a scholar, then proceeds to the cashier to pay his tuition and for posting of his accounts. Scholars proceeds to the bookkeeper to submit COR and for posting of accounts.

7. After payment, the student proceeds to the registrar’s office to submit requirements for enrollment.

8. Enrollment completed!!!

Based on the enrollment systems I had showed above, I found these differentiations between the two systems.

Since last school year’s enrollment process that was posted does apply to all but does not really specify the requirements of the new, old and transfer (shiftees) students, I will just compare the differences base on the experience I have when I first came here (first year enrollment).

Before I became an official student of the university, I have gone various transactions just to be admitted in the university. After the entrance test, interview, English plus test, and medical check-up, I was ready for the enrollment. I can hardly remember the details on what I have gone then but I will just relate what I have remembered right now. All I can say is that it seems like I have gone in a war (Laugh). I also thought then that it is difficult being in the university, there are a lot to surpass but when you had surpassed those obstacles, there is this enrollment that you should also participate to be an official student. Well, seems like I have a lot in my mind right now, let’s proceed in differentiating the two systems.

First I have a round trip of the university just to know where the headlight and OCSC offices were. After that, I went to the last line to be accommodated. The line almost reached the university field that was too long to wait just to pay the Headlight fee. After that, I proceed to the OCSC office to pay for my payments. Just like what I had experienced on paying the Headlight, I also have to fall in line just to be accommodated. Just the same as the line in the headlight, it was too long, so, I had waited a long time just to pay my fees. After the long tiring hours falling in line and paying my miscellaneous fees, I went to the Adviser. I was not yet saved in falling in long lines just to be accommodated. I felt relief to be inside the adviser’s office to submit the preliminary requirements. The adviser checked them. After checking the required papers, I was then given a paper and instructed to fill it out with the subjects listed in the prospectus. I later knew that the paper that was given to me was called PRF or pre registration form. I filled it out and submitted it to the adviser. After checking and signing my PRF, I was then instructed to go to the encoder for encoding of my subjects. It was such a busy day that you must fall in line again and get your priority number just to be entertained. There are also times that you can have identical priority number with other enrollee that is so difficult to tell who among you will be entertained first. It was just in the encoder and it feels like forever waiting there. When you’re accommodated, you will wait for the creation of your account and still wait about 15 minutes in order to print and get your COR or Certificate of Registration. Having your COR does not end the enrollment transaction yet. I went to the cashier for the payment of my tuition fee. Again, I have to fall in line, again, just to be accommodated. After a long time of waiting, it’s time to go to the registrar and again, you must fall a long line just to be accommodated. But before you can fall in line, you must ask to where you must submit your papers because enrollees are not properly informed to where they should submit their requirement whether in window 1 or in door 1. Well, that was the last transaction and you will be officially enrolled. But, the transaction may take two or three days, because you will spend your day in falling in line just to be accommodated.

It was when I was in my freshman years. I am lucky to be in my second year up to now since every semester, enrollees that I consider as rivals in the line are being decreased by 20%. Well, these students are those who had opened their eyes and shifted to the other colleges or schools, especially, Institute of Computing students. Well, it’s been known that every semester, there are students who are evicted in the college. (Laugh)

What about today’s enrollment system. Well, I kind of like the system right now. Thanks to the in-house programmers. I’m very proud to be under their subjects even just for a month - remember, they were pulled out of those subjects and was given to other instructors because of this.

I can’t really feel the difficultness of the enrollment right now. It is because we are not that many compared to the freshmen and sophomores. Even so, I still feel that the modification of the enrollment system made it easy for the students in the enrollment.

We will not go to the Headlight and OCSC offices just to pay our miscellaneous fees to the respective treasurers. We will not fall in line and wait for hours just to pay these fees. The transaction is made simpler by making these fees being paid in the respective college Local Council treasurers. Evaluation and advising is not the hassle anymore since students are accommodated by the respective advisers and will not wait hours just to face the advisers. Encoding of subjects is made easier because of the new system made by two of the institute of Computing instructors. Students will not wait for how many minutes just to have the COR printed. New units are visible in the offices that made the transactions more efficient and faster that made more students to be accommodated. I can still remember back then that having those slow printers made us hungrily wait for our Certificate of Registration to be printed. Speaking of Certificate of Registration or COR, I like the way they distributed it to every offices the student will have a transaction. In this way, some of the COR copies will not be crumpled or worse, being lost. The COR paper is also presentable unlike before that the paper is being changed time to time that a time came that the COR is just a scratch paper. Paying the tuition fee in the cashier is also made faster and better. What I am worried next is the line to the registrar. Way back to the old enrollment system, students are being entertained by college and with these, registration process is faster compared to now that all students must wait and have priority numbers just to be officially enrolled. If only I can measure the length of the line to the registrar, well we have gone from the College of Arts and Sciences second floor, near the grand stand just to reach the registrar’s office to have our papers checked and be enrolled officially. Lots of students are suffering from heat, feet pains, and hunger just to be officially enrolled. The system made the transactions faster but what happened to the registrar is the only problem that I have seen last enrollment.

The old enrollment system was so hard for us students. There is a lot of time wasted by the students just waiting to be accommodated. Then there came this new system, it made easy not just for the students but for the encoders, cashiers and in the registrar’s office. The only flaw that I have seen is in the registrar’s office. The transaction in finance department had improved but what happened in the registrar’s office is that it worsened. There should be one window that will accommodate these specific courses for students not to be tucked in courses who had a lot of students or population.

If I were to modify the system a bit, I would not change the way the student pays his miscellaneous fees such as the Headlight and OSCS fees be paid together with the Local Council fees in the Local Council treasurer. I am fine with the process for checking and evaluation of students’ grades. The encoding process is also faster than before and it is also good to know that there are new units for the good of the transactions. Since it is a pain for everybody to fall in line in paying the tuition fee, I think it is much better if there is representative of the finance department who will collect the tuition payments of students in the respective colleges. I know it will have a cost in employees, so I thought of having a finance officer in every building to collect students’ payments – one in the College of Technology building, one in the Engineering Building, where The Institute of Computing and the engineering students will have to pay there. One in the College of Education and those other students will pay in the finance department located in the College of Arts and Sciences building especially the graduate school and scholars. After such is the registration. In the registrar, it is much better if there is a specific window for specific courses where students will have their transaction. With this, it will be much better and the enrollment process will be much better.

What do you think is/are the reasons why the university decided to tapped in-house resources, was it a good decision?

This is what I think about the university’s decision on tapping in-house resources in the development of the university’s system. I think that the decision is an excellent one because it makes use of what the university really has rather than waste it. The university had saved a lot especially in financial matters. To assess the cost of buying software is too expensive not to mention the hardware to where the program resides and be executed. The cost of the programmer and the maintenance team is also a factor to consider. The fact that the occurrence of problems regarding this may occur in the absence of those who really develop the system, the university’s maintenance team may take charge of the problem but not at all times. In consequence, the main programmer is in need. Since, we are not in-charge of the people’s time; errors that occurred in the system may take time to be fixed. This is the reason why I am really in favor of the decision made by university to tap in-house resources. In accordance to this, I can state instances that bring a lot of advantages for the university in using in-house resources. These advantages that I can easily point out are being economical, saves time and being university-focused.

What makes it economical? Just as stated above, assessing the cost of the software is expensive enough, how much more if we add the hardware and the people ware? But by tapping in-house resources, it can lessen the cost of these things. Let’s evaluate the cost software has. Using proprietary software is really costly but there are free software that can be modified and can be used without charge as long as you concur with the terms of agreement. Free and Open Source Software – this is what these free software are called. With this, the university can make use of it and can modify for the university’s use. Based on what I have learned recently in our Elective 1 subject, FOSS is governed by the principles of open standards that made such software to run in any platforms. I don’t know if the university uses such software. But I know the possibility that they do. Hardware is not a big issue anyway, even though the university lacks facilities but as to what I noticed right now, the university is beginning to upgrade and add the facilities herein. To support this statement, base on what I noticed on the time of enrollment, there are new printers on the registrar’s office; I guess there are new units too. What about the people who are behind the development? It is the university’s pride to have people like them at the university. With this, it is not difficult for them to address the university’s problems, since the one developing the university’s system is working in the university and are well-informed about the issues regarding these. The system developers are in the premises of the university that is the reason why if problems regarding the system occur; it is just easy for them to fix these malfunctions. It not just answers the problem but helps not to paralyze the transactions involving the university, especially when it’s enrollment that everyone is eager to make every transaction speedy.

Paralyzed transactions - this is the result when the system breaks down. Tapping in-house resources can answer this problem. When system has the problem, it is the maintenance team or the programmer’s task to fix it. Having an in-house developer makes these problems more quickly to address and solved. I kind of notice it also last enrollment. I got to narrate it shortly. It was just recently, enrollment time. The student’s Pre-enrollment Forms (PRFs) are filed up because the new system behaves badly – there is a problem on the program, I think. Since, the developers are within the university, the problem has been solved quickly and the certificates of registration (CORs) are being disseminated in the afternoon of that very day. One thing I also noticed is that when the developers of the system works in the university, it is easy to contact them. A phone call is just enough for the problems to be answered. This is the reason why I included time saver as an advantage for tapping in-house resources. Time - the most important thing in every transaction.

How about being university-focused? Tapping in-house resources is a pride the university can boast. Not all universities develop and use a system that they can call their own. Just as to what was stated above, since developers of the system came from the university, it is a proof that when you graduated here, you can really apply in the future what was taught to you and you can really learn when you are still in the university. This is not just singing your own praises but as to what was seen, it is a fact. This is called application of the theory – application of the education one can get in the university. I can’t help but to imagine the result of the systems we proposed in SAD1. The systems proposed are to be developed for some of the organizations of the school. Now, in System Analysis and Design 2, we can’t help but to really implement them, I hope the university will make use of it, too. It is a great pleasure for us. Isn’t it great to have your proposed system being used officially by the university? Talking of the systems we proposed, if the university will really adapt and make use of it officially, it will be not just our pride but of the university, also. In addition, those system made by USEPIANS is exclusively and especially made for the University of Southeastern Philippines.

Just as to what was stated earlier in this article, I can say that the university made the excellent decision. It is also a great pleasure for our in-house developers to be tapped by the university. This just means that the university honors and has great confidence to their skills that is considered as the university’s great pride.

It's quite a while since I posted my last article here. The month of June has come. Another school year to endure. Quizzes, exams, projects. Name them all...

It's already my 5th year in the Institute of Computing of USEP, I hope this school year will be fruitful for me. Not just for me but for all the students, especially the CS Survivors (LOL.)

Even though my schedule's quite busy, I'm am still working on my second fan fiction. It has no title yet but it is based on a true story. Actually, it's about teen pregnancy and being responsibe to things in such a young age. I hope that bloggers will look forward to it. Since it is a fan fiction, I chose Kim Kibum of Super Junior and Lee Se-Yeong as the main characters of the story. I don't know why I picked those two. I think the characters they have just suits the story...

What I'm gonna do?

I should be going with my classmates right now to look for companies here in Davao who needs OJ Trainees. But I'm here, in front of the computer writing this article. I finished my resume NOT on time that's why I'm left behind. So, in order to make my time worthy, I'm looking for Companies online who needs OJT. That's what I'm doing for about an hour now. I discovered this game from a friend who happened to play it online (actually this is an online game... hehehe...). I was fascinated by his stories and how he described every adventures one can encounter while playing the game. I am so curious that I want to see and play it myself.

I really did play it a while ago and that completed my curiosity.

I am so amazed! I really love the game even though you can just play it in an hour. The effects are so real even the persons that you can see in the game, they seemed real!Plus the sound effect are so great that you can really feel something weird specially when you are alone and lights off.

I'm a bit of a spoiler to post this snap shots but I hope the Hotel626 developers and owners will not file any charges against me (oh no, I haven't read the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy... ). I just want others to see some of the highlights in this game...

Use Case Name:

USEP Enrollment System

Brief Description:

University of Southeastern Philippines' Student's Enrollment procedure for scholars and non-scholars.

Actors:

Student, Student's Organization treasurers, Adviser,NSTP Coordinator/s, Encoder, Cashier, Registrar, Librarian

Procedure flow:

The student pays for his/her clubs and organization fees to his/her respective local council treasurer. He/she must also pay the Headlight and the OCSC treasurers.
If the student is a scholar, he/she must renew or validate his/her scholarship to the OSS office.
The student will proceed to his/her college adviser for grade evaluation and checking. The adviser will be the one to secure PRF and what will be the subjects the student can enroll.
When a student has NSTP (ROTC or CWTS), he/she must proceed to the NSTP offices first to be able to enroll the course.
After filling out the PRF , the student will proceed to the encoder for encoding.
When subject are encoded, the student goes to the finance department to pay for matriculation. When a student is a scholar, he/she may proceed to the bookkeeper and will not pay the matriculation to the cashier.
After the payment has been done, the student proceeds to the registrar for checking of the enrollment requirements. The registrar will be the one to accept or reject the student's enrollment.
After the student's COR has been marked "OFFICIALLY ENROLLED", he/she can go to the librarian for validation of the e-library card.
Enrollment complete!!!

The student is OFFICIALLY ENROLLED after the registrar checks the student's requirements for enrollment. In order to complete the enrollment process, the student must validate his/her library card- on the day of the enrollment or it's still time for validation.

The processes (use-case) are represented as horizontal ellipse and are labeled with the following transactions the student must do in order to be enrolled in USEP. In order for a system to function to its best, SDLC should be considered- so as our life's success.

If I were to relate my life to SDLC, I would prefer it be predictive so as adaptive. Why Predictive? It is because I want to have an predictive image of me in the future while I'm still working for it at the present. This way, I can see what my goal would be.

Adaptive. There are certain circumstances that we can't predict what will happen next. In order not to be disappointed on goals unattained, I should learn to adapt to things. There are also circumstances that the what I planned at present can be upgraded in the future. In other words, in order to succeed, I must be able to adapt.

My own SDLC would be first to gather certain information. Next is to analyze, then its checking followed by pre-implementation. Again , it must be check then its execution.

First step

Gathering information is necessary in determining what kind of goal you want to achieve. As for my life, I must know what are my strengths and weaknesses. I must know what I have and what I lack. Thus, it is like evaluating myself.

Second step

Analysis is very important in the process of the life cycle. We should analyze every single detail first before doing something.

Third step

Checking. Small problems are sometimes overlooked that can cause big destruction. That's why checking must be done.

Fourth step

Pre-implementation. After analyzing the data you gathered, its time to implement them to something you want based in the analysis you had made. But always remember that it's not yet the final phse of our SDLC since there may be bugs or problems that were overlooked.

Fifth step

Rechecking must be done for problems that are overlooked.

Final step

After all the steps done, its time to implement the plan.

Among the data gathering techniques, I prefer and is most comfortable with interviewing.

Although I can also gather data by observation but still there are a lot of things that can be asked, that's the reason why I prefer interviewing.

I am the type of person who can gather much information by face to face interaction with the person who had the entire knowledge about something. I also have the assurance that the data I have gathered are true and valid since I hear it from the mouth of the one who has the knowledge of it all. I can also ask for some information that he/she must have forgot to say. In interviewing, you can recapitulate the data gathered and can be validated by the speaker. With this, I am confident that the information I have gathered are correct.

Think about your approved/proposed systems, is it worth the three or more years of learnings you get from the university? Describe how you arrive with this proposal.

This is the question that made me do some reflection about the learnings I have from the University.

About our proposed and approved system, I think, with the time given to us, it is justifiable to have the kind of system (a Blotter System). I know it's too elementary- too simple but, what the group think is to arrive a system that can benefit the masses (people) and that we can accomplish in the length of time available.

Is it worth the three or more years of learnings you get from the university?

Frankly speaking,I can say that the system we proposed is not worth the years we had learned from the university. I know, the teachers ,especially, Sir Gamboa have a big expectation from us as students of the University of Southeastern Philippines and I know what sir Gamboa wants us to do with ourselves. He just want us to grow- to be what an I.T professional should be and I really thank him for that challenge.

How do we arrive with the proposal?

Actually, we have no idea what kind of system we will propose. We went to several establishments but failed to have a contact with them regarding the project. Luckily, one of us suggested to go to her father's workplace for another try and we were entertained. And that's how the system came about.

Five chapters down!(I think it's better to say five chapters finished).Uhmm....how show I start?

Since chapter one's been reported a long time ago(last,last month, I think), the subject that had retained to me is the question Ma'am Tammy opened---"What's the difference between SAD and SE?" It's the big issue that day.

Software engineering and System Analysis and Design really has its similarities. I once had a confusion to this.But as time goes by, the confusion I have is been answered. Thanks to sir Cagape for the life cycle he discussed in our software engineering. According tot he system's life cycle, SAD's falls on the first phases of developing a system. In other words, its more on eliciting requirements and gathering data. To sum it up,its analysis,analysis and analysis.

Does this mean Software Engineering falls on the following phases of System Development?
Yes, it does Software Engineering is more on the implementation of the gathered data & requirement. To sum it up, that's where the design-making and bloody coding takes place.
So, SAD and SE are related with each other.

Then the following four chapters been discussed. I can't point out topics in each chapters discussed, so I just make my reflection on this in general.

What I've learned in these four chapters?

There are lots of things the reporters had said and I admit that there are times that I felt sleepy and tired to listen.

SDLC-System Development Life -Cycle. This topic is been absorbed on my mind since almost or all the reports tackled covers it. Then there's the 2 approaches of gathering data,technique in eliciting requirements, people involved in the system's development and many others.

I have seen a lot of slides w/ varying designs but only few of the topics been retained on my mind.

Just like one of my classmates said on the sharing of learning this friday morning,I also think that it's better to read and understand those things by yourself and just ask for help if you don't understand it at all.

That thursday is also a meaningful day to me because of what Sir Gamboa want us to do w/ ourselves. I really reflected on what sir had said.

What is my Objective?

This question made me to pause for a moment and reflect. I think I must have a System Analysis and Design on my own.(sir also mentioned this.....)

I think this is the reason why my system(my own self) is good enough;it is not validated. Must I schedule a workthrough?

August 30-31,2008

August 30:
NOON:
Our rendezvous is outside the USEP , Obrero Campus. We stayed there for minutes, waiting for the others to come. Identification cards were distributed among members and aspirants. before leaving the city, we gathered and ask for God's guidance. We rode a PUJ from Obrero to Roxas. We stopped for a change of vehicle to Calinan.

Since it's kind of a long ride, I decided to take a nap since we cannot see the views outside. i was awaken when we arrived somewhere (I don't know the place) - It's a pineapple plantation actually. Even i can't see the outside view clearly, I still managed to take a peak and saw a beautiful scenery!(how I wished I have a picture taken...sigh!)

AFTERNOON:
Upon arriving at Tamayong, we started hiking the steep road amidst the banana plantation until we reached the slippery, grassy and hard-to-pass trails, We spent the whole two hours walking, sometimes stopping by for a rest and continue the trail.

I like walking on downward slopes but it really gave me a hard time walking on the upward slopes. Feels like I can't breathe. Next time I will really do jogging as the members told us to do so. But even so, I surpassed all the trails.

DUSK:
We arrived at the camping site on the time I don't know. I didn't noticed the time. Upon arriving, we pitched our tents and changed clothes and got ready for the night.

NIGHT:
It was sooooo cold that even I'm wearing a jacket i can still feel the chill. After dinner , we gathered together to socialize. we were asked questions such as " Why did you join the club?" and aspirants introduced ourselves and showcased our talents -undiscovered or discovered.

Since it's too cold, Prex let us take a rest so early. I can't sleep that night. I can't stand the cold. I can't endure lying down because it seems like I'm sleeping on wet surface. So I slept while crouching on my toes.

August 31:
SUNRISE:
I woke up so early but can't manage to go out the tent. I barely slept the other night. After some time, we rise up and got out from the tent. We went down the hill to fetch water. we cooked breakfast because Anjoe request to...(laugh). I just warned them not to blame me if they got stomache. But nothing happened , really.

After breakfast, we again walked the hard and soft paths -grassy and muddy, upward and downward slopes. Until we reached our destination. At last I saw the FALLS with my bare eyes.(It's my first time, you know.). The scenery took the tiredness I felt. my exhausted body became alert as I felt the water with my hands. I saw and felt the coolness of the place. Too refreshing!!! Then we transferred to the other falls. There, all aspirants were like being baptized.(you know what its like, don't you?) Then the members announced that we are the SAMEC aspirants batch 2009!!!

After that, we crossed the river. I really admired the guys for being so helpful and I really thanked them for doing so. We do rappelling and head back to the campsite.

NOON:
We reached the campsite passed 1:00 pm. The other aspi's cooked viand since the rice was already cooked. After fixing out tents and our personal belongings, we ate our lunch.

After lunch, we gathered, prayed for God's guidance and headed home. We walked another trail on going home.

AFTERNOON:
We reached the foot of the hill about 5 in the afternoon. since the PUJ is there already, we rode in and felt sleepy of the long walk that afternoon.

NIGHT:
It's already dark when we reached the City. I feel no tiredness upon arriving at Davao. We still walked to Prex's house to eat dinner...( weee! yum yum yum). After some story telling, we decide to go home. Home sweet home.

The money that we spent on that climb was nothing compared to the memories we have for that two days. I gained new friends and shared new and unforgettable memories. The only thing that is lacking is that a friend was unable to join the climb because her father didn't permit her to. It is much more unforgettable if she's one of us.

I hope to have unforgettable climb once more...

He was supposed to be my oppa, my crying shoulder and my defender. I never imagined that the twist of faith will turn me to realize what I felt for him is not what I thought it would be… I didn’t know he existed before. We are enrolled in different schools and don’t even take a single glance when coincidentally be together in inter-schools’ activities. I only heard of is name, of how such guy so talented landed the earth. Yes, he is so popular especially to the girls. He’s a dance icon and a leader-type of guy. He has this thing in him that makes students even teachers proud of him. I heard he’s the president of both the school’s Student Council and the Dance Troupe. One more thing is that he carries the #10 in their school’s soccer team which means he is the team’s striker and the ace player. I heard a lot of things about him yet I never had the chance of meeting him in person. I have no time though. Even though how beautiful he is on everyone’s’ eyes, for me he’s still a normal school-guy like anybody else. But that was I thought of him before until I joined our church’s choir and discovered his true self, of who Lee Donghae oppa really is.

Knowing him isn’t that easy. My first day with the group is a full of tense for me. I’m a bit shy because I am such an outcast. All of them came from the same school while I’m not. They all studied at the public school in our place while I’m the only one among them who’s in private. There are pretty much students in public compared to private schools and our choir members can prove that. Since he’s the Sunbae of the group and the one who handles us, he was the one who introduced me to the group. I thought they will treat me as something they can pull their pranks to but what I expected turned the other way around. They are friendlier compared to my mates at school. I got to know each other very well especially Suh Gin. Through Su Gin sshi, I learned a lot about Donghae oppa. They’re a bit close since they are both officials of their student council and the Dance troupe, too. Since Su Gin don’t have a brother, she treated Donghae oppa as a real brother and Donghae oppa’s been grateful about it since he can have a sibling in the person of Suh Gin. Because of Suh Gin, I got acquainted with Donghae oppa and got a chance to get close to him though not so close as Suh Gin. Being Donghae oppa’s friends makes me proud of myself. The reason is that Donghae oppa isn’t just the person whom people admired. The way they see him is much different from mine. They all see him as what he is physically or should I say, they see Donghae oppa on the outside while I see him from the inside. He is more that the person they knew. Donghae oppa’s always there to give support in everything you need as long as he can make it. He puts others first than himself. He always lend his ears to hear you out, his arms to hug to warm you from sadness, his shoulder for you to cry on, his hands to help you and his heart to give all the love he has. That’s the reason why we are so happy to have him in the choir. It’s been three years and we’re still in the choir but can’t sing every mass because we’re busy studying. We are in college right now and the only means of contacting each other is through our cell phones. An email from Suh Gin or from Donghae oppa can make my day complete. I haven’t have friends like them at school that’s why I’m happy to get an email or a call from them. I enjoyed Donghae oppa’s emailed jokes and kept reading it over and over. Eve though they’re so far, the memories we’ve shared makes me feel that they’re right beside me, so near. I think that’s friendship.

I thought being a freshman in college is so hard but when my phone beeps early in the morning with Donghae oppa’s message that surely makes my day beautiful and Suh Gin’s message at night makes me think I can surpass college without sweat. I thought this day-to-day of exchanging e-mails will not mend until one morning. It was my birthday then that I waited for the morning to come to read Donghae oppa’s e-mail to me. I decided not sleep until I will receive oppa’s e-mail. I am pretty sure that he’ll be the first person who will greet me “Happy birthday”. My cell did ring. I was so excited and picked it up quickly. My hands been trembling, my heart is pumping abnormally and feels like my stomach shakes. I opened my phone but suddenly the big smile that was painted on my face before vanished as I disappointedly opened Suh Gin’s e-mail saying, ”Saeng il chukkae yo, Yoona sshi.” Why am I feeling this? I must be happy, it is Suh Gin, my friend who greeted me and I bet she sacrificed waking up so early just to greet me on my special day. Why am I sad? I just replied,”Suh Gin sshi, go ma yo”, placed my cell phone on the table and returned to my bed until I fell asleep. The sun was up when I woke up. I quickly got up from bed and grabbed my cell phone hoping that Donghae oppa sent an e-mail while I am asleep but it turned out that his name wasn’t among the e-mail senders. I checked my voice mail, but still there’s no message coming from him. It’s strange how come he forgot to greet me on my birthday. And these strange things continued the next day and the next.

It’s been months without getting e-mails and news from Donghae oppa. That’s why I phoned Suh Gin to ask. “It’s impossible!” that’s what she said to me. She added that Donhae oppa’s been sending her e-mails but not those that says, “Wake up or you’ll be late.” Or “you must eat breakfast before going to school.” She said, Donghae oppa’s been sending her forwarded messages and are all sad ones or ones to ponder. She bet that Donghae oppa’s been problematic these days that one night he phoned Suh Gin and seems like he’s drunk and is crying. I felt my heart been crumpled listening to Suh Gin’s news. I closed my eyes. I can see Donghae oppa’s angelic face. I remembered the times when we were singing together in the choir. He has this cold hoarse voice that can lift up souls. He sings with his heart out. His sweet smile, he never loses it even once. He is a happy person. What makes him that sad? “Yah, Yoona! Are you still there?” Suh Gin’s voice makes me open my eyes. “Yeah, I’m still here.” I replied. She then continued that she heard that Donghae oppa’s soccer team will be playing at the Nationals this weekend and she had bought two tickets for us to see the game. Even though I have an acquaintance with the College Theater ministry that day, I did not refuse Suh Gin’s offer. It is an opportunity to see Donghae oppa once again. That day came. I did not go for practice and went to see the game.

The game already started when we arrived at the stadium. Suh Gin’s been absorbed in the game, cheering every time Donghae oppa’s team got the ball. But I am not. I am just there looking at Donghae oppa’s face. He’s gotten thinner. Feels like, he hasn’t slept for days. His cheerful aura is still there but something about him changed. The game ended without me knowing. Suh Gin is jumping of joy and that’s how I knew the game ended and they have won. Suh Gin grabbed my hand and run towards the field. She’s calling out Donghae oppa. Hearing her, Donghae oppa look towards us and gave a huge smile. I know he’s happy to see Suh Gin sshi, but does he feel the same towards me? I wonder but I was surprised when he hugged us both saying, “I’m so happy that you’re here! I think your presence is the reason why we won.” Hearing those words made me so happy.

We shared the lunchtime talking together. He sure ate a lot than usual. Now I can see his face more clearly. Yeah, seems like he had no sleep. He got big, dark eye bags. His goatee seems visible. I think he didn’t shave this day. He should take good care of himself. If only I can say that to him, but we are not that close unlike Suh Gin who can tell him everything she wants to say. I envied her so much but I can’t change the fact that I am only a member of the choir for him. He noticed my silence but did not ask me why; instead, he got something from his bag and handed it to me. I did not expect it,but he gave me a small blue box. He said I should not open it until I arrive to our dorm. I smiled as a sign of thanking him and he smiled back at me, too. I think I’m in cloud nine as he said the words “Belated happy birthday Yoona.” He did not forget my special day and even it’s a little too late, I know he will never forget. Suh Gin told him how worried I am for not hearing from him. I am so ashamed of the fact that Donghae oppa will know that I cared for him and I’m afraid that he’ll know my feelings keep hidden from him that I want to walk away from them but my heart wants me to stay – to know how he felt for me too. But to my surprise, he did not even say a word. His face hardened as if it annoys him to be cared of by me. It hurts me, really hurts me. I wanted to just burst into tears but I don’t want him to see me crying because of him. I decided to have an excuse to leave. “What time is it?” I ask to start my excuse. Donghae oppa looked at his watch wand said, “Aish! Yoona sshi, gam sa ham nida” he said. I wonder why he’s thanking me but then he added, “The team still, has a meeting today. I’m afraid I will leave you two now. I think Yoona sshi have something to do, too.” I just nodded not looking from his eyes. I’m avoiding those eyes. Those two dark brown twinkling windows of the soul can read your thoughts. I’m afraid that he can read mine that is why I’m avoiding them. We part by saying a simple “Ah nyeong hi ka se yo”.

I don’t know if I can see him again. Even though it’s impossible for me to see him without Suh Gin, I’m still hoping that someday it will happen. I’m on the train station with Suh gin when my phone rang. Iwas surprised to read Donghae oppa’s name on the screen. He sent me an e-mail? Why? This simple thing makes me felt joy. I excitedly open the message and read, “Dongsaeng, your make-up is cute but you look cuter with no make up on. It will show the real beauty in you. By the way, thanks for coming. I am so happy to see the two of you.” I am confused of the message. I did not put on make-up. I was thinking about it when Suh gin burst out, “Yah! Oppa’s so cruel. I just put on a little make-up.” I realized, the message’s for Suh gin and not for me. Why would he send it to me? I am not his Dongsaeng, I am Yoona, member of the church choir.

My phone again rang. I hesitated to open it. I’m tired of those nonsense messages. Those I’m expecting will not e-mail me but those I’m not expecting will always do. I will be happy if it’s coming from Donghae oppa, but I know it’s impossible. He’s not sending e-mails anymore. We are inside the train when my instinct told me to open my cell phone once and see who the sender. My prayer’s been heard, it’s Donghae oppa! “Yoona sshi, go ma yo for coming. I really appreciate it. Hope you like my gift.” Even though it’s a simple greeting, it made me cry because even in simple things, I made him happy. Suh Gin noticed me sobbing. She quickly turned to me and asked,” What’s the matter?” I said nothing, wiping my tears. I headed to the dorm and sank my tired body on the soft bed and close my eyes.

Slowly, Donghae oppa’s face became visible in my mind. I can hear his voice so cold echoing in my ears and his smile. I opened my eyes and he’s not there. Then I remember that small box he gave me. I wonder what’s inside, but I can’t open it. I can’t open it because I feel like I betrayed him. That gift is for his dongsaeng, his used-to-be little sister, Yoona and not this Yoona who’s falling for him. I love him in secrecy. I will only open that box when time came when this feeling I have for him will fade. But, when will it be? I can’t make this feeling stop just like that. I wish I could turn back the time. I regret joining the choir, I regret the time when I became close to him. I regret every song we sang together. But even though I regret those things, I did not regret that time I know him – which he came into my life. May my letter can show my love for him; may reach him. I know I can’t open that small box anymore. I can only open it when I will be reborn and will forget this feeling I have for him. It is my fault for falling for him. There’s only one solution to make my love for him, not to grow deeply inside me.

This night will be a memorable day for me to stop this love I have. I know loving is not a sin but betraying someone because of love isn’t love at all. I am already selfish. As I close my eyes, I want Donghae oppa’s face to appear in my mind, to be my guide, to be my light…

Red lights flickered and the sound of sirens echoed outside the dormitory that night. The dormitorians were in rage and so much shocked of the scenery.

The next morning, Donghae and Suh Gin rushed to the hospital. They did not enter the hospital’s ward anymore and is directed to go to the morgue. Suh Gin is crying while Donghae lost his grip and move towards the covered corpse on the embalming table. He slowly opened the white cloth that covers the corpse’s face and burst into tears after seeing the dead body’s face. She was Yoona! Donghae hugged her tightly and cried bitterly. Suh Gin move closer to them and held Yoona’s cold, pale hands. She cried loudly and called out Yoona’s name. Suh Gin’s emotions laid low. She’s still holding Yoona’s hand and discovered something inside her grip. Yoona’s holding something. She looked at Donghae with teary eyes. Donghae noticed the thing stucked into her hand. He cried even more seeing the blue box in Yoona’s hand still locked. Suh Gin tried to get the box from Yoona’s grip but failed. She looked at the doctor asking about that stuff but the doctor just said,” I don’t understand why I can’t get that box from her grip, so I just left it alone.” Donghae held her hand trying to open it.

All in the room was surprised to see that Donghae easily got the box from Yoona’s grip and a crumpled paper fell from her hand without him knowing.

That night, Donghae called Suh Gin to go to his pad the next morning to refresh Yoona’s memories with them. Teary eyed, Donghae asked Suh Gin not to grieve too much for their friend’s death because death is not the end but the beginning of a new life. Suh Gin remembered the crumpled paper that fell from Yoona’s hand. She looked for it in her pocket and saw it there. She straightened and read it. Her eyes widened reading the letter. It was Yoona’s handwriting and seems like the paper’s been soaked in Yoona’s tears. The letter is for Donghae that’s why she hurriedly put on her sweater and hurried to the train station.

She reached Donghae’s pad at exactly midnight. She rang the bell. No one’s answering. She knocked the door twice, thrice. Still, no one’s answering. She went to the fire exit. Luckily, she found that one of the windows was open. She climbed in and looked for Donghae. The room is in order but dim. She heard the noise coming from the television in the living room; Donghae might be there. She went there and saw Donghae sleeping on the couch in front the open television. “There you are oppa.” She said and is going to wake him up but found herself shrieking seeing blood coming from Donghae’s forehead. She shakes her oppa to wake him up but found the gun still hanging in his hand. She turned on the lights and call for the ambulance but it’s too late, Donghae is cold and DEAD! He shot himself right on the head! She cried and cried for her oppa. She cried because the two important persons in her life left her. She looked at her oppa’s face, he’s crying, the small blue box, on his hand.

The ambulance arrived and took Donghae. Suh Gin was left alone at Donghae’s pad. She got Yoona’s letter from her pocket and opened the small box that Donghae gave her friend. It was a necklace with a human heart-shape pendant. A piece of paper was attached to the necklace saying

“Sorry for not sending you emails recently. I just can’t stand it when I can confess my love to you through my messages. I want to be with you but I’m afraid that I am just the one loving you ‘coz I can feel that you only see me as a brother. Since that day you joined the choir, your voice wakes this love that’s been sleeping for years. Yoona sshi, this is my heart, I’m giving it to you now. I hope to have yours too. Saranghae yo.”

Suh Gin glanced at Yoona’s letter, a passage there says,

“...the only way to stop me from loving you is to stop my heart from beating. I better struck this heart of mine so that in my next life, I will not be able to love you. Donghae oppa, meanhae, ‘coz now, I will give you my heart…” :(

Kim Jaejoong/Youngwoong Jaejoong/Hero Birth date:26-01-1986 Debuted with the mysterious and cold personality image. He was at first given the role as main vocals but later on, that role just depended on the song they sang. He was discovered with great vocal talents, though he didnt start out that way, and had won a award for being seriously good looking. He used to smoke but has stopped now. He’s very talkative and loves making balloon animals and cooking. He is mostly known for: vocals, cute laugh, good looks, cold first impression, and cooking skills.

Jung Yunho/u-know yunho Birth date:06-02-1986 Debuted as the manly leader of the group. Was given the role of the leader since Jaejoong didnt want it and neither did the rest of the members. He was discovered in a dance competition. He is mostly known for: dance skills, delicate face, and being the leader of DBSK .

Park Yoochun/Micky Yoochun Birth date:04-06-1986 The last minute member. He debuted with the role of a gentle and romantic guy, though in reality he’s a complete prankster that likes to play with peoples minds. He was discovered in the US and was brought to korea for training before the debut of DBSK . He is mostly known for: being very romantic, pranks, being able to speak english with less of an accent than the others.

Kim Junsu/Xiah Junsu Birth date:15-12-1986 The angel of the group. He debuted with the image of high class, and charisma, but after a certain incident, he became the cute and adorable Xiah pratically all of asia loves. He was the first to be part of DBSK , and had wait , i think, 6 years, before he debuted. THe worst times of his life was when his voice was changing, spent three years with a cracked voice, unable to sing. He is mostly known for: his angelic smile, angelic laugh, heck, known for being a complete angel!

Shim Changmin/ChoiKang Changmin/Max Birth date:18-02-1988 The youngest of the group. Debuted with the cute and adorable image, but after the incident with Junsu, Changmin grew his hair out, got a way darker tan, and grew taller, changing his image to Tall, Dark and Handsome! He is mostly known for: his ability to eat 7 meals a day, adorably happy expression where his eyes are somewhat mismatched, and being the youngest yet tallest of the group.

DBSK- You Should Know Them...

I was surfing in the internet when a music video caught my attention. It was just a simple video about a Korean boyband. i had no idea why I clicked the play button and watched attentively to the video. To my luck, it was such a nice video! I can't explain why I really love that video. It was a Music video of the song "O" by DBSK. Since then, I searched for their profile and managed to know them by the infos given to me by the "net"(internet).

I want you to see the video too. It's up to you to judge the video but for me, IT"S AMAZINGLY THE BEST!!!

What I'm doing lately...

Hey, guys... I had nothing to post in my blog yet that's the reason why I'm not happy seeing this empty blog of mine. By the way, I'm still working on my new fiction entitled Numb Heart. The story revolves around the two characters Brent and Tatel. They were high school students actually. The story is an anime type but I hope that when I will post it you'll love reading it... (jejeje...)

Actually, I include pictures of asian artists that I love to satisfy your eyes. The artists I chose were Jung (U know) Yunho of DBSK, a korean lad and Horikita Maki, one of the rising young Japanese actresses nowadays.
